The Paris 2024 Olympic Games offered viewers around the world not only spectacular sporting performances, but also innovative technological experiences. Luxiris had the privilege of working with France Télévisions – Réseau Outre-Mer to set up an augmented reality system on the set of the daily Olympic news programme filmed in Malakoff (Paris region), with a teleportation effect for guests at Club France.
Working with the artistic director, Julien Monel, and the consultant director, Nicolas Clerno, Luxiris proposed and set up the technical system, comprising a stYpe RedSpy tracking system and the Avid Maestro real-time rendering engine.
Viewers were treated to programmes where the virtual and the real merged. Each day, an Olympic discipline was showcased in augmented reality, allowing the commentators to give greater detail to the sports presented (athletics, boxing, surfing, etc.). This immersive system was designed to support the programme’s editorial focus. Not only did it enhance the programmes visually, it also enabled viewers to understand the subtleties of each sport.
Each Olympic discipline was accompanied by a holographic interview from Club France at La Villette. The artistic direction wanted to use a teleportation effect to overcome the geographical constraints. Luxiris came up with an innovative technical solution: Although the set at La Villette is several kilometres from the main studio and only accommodates one person, this technology enabled dynamic interaction between the interviewed athlete and the journalist.
Luxiris was responsible for the integration and operation of augmented reality (AR). Loïc Le Roux, Nadia Waechter, Jérôme Leclerc and Hugo Denier were able to respond to the channel’s wishes and implement this technical device to offer viewers an original and differentiating experience.
